About DEXA / BMD

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan measures bone mineral density (BMD) to assess your risk of fractures and osteoporosis. It uses a very low dose of radiation and is the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis.

How to Prepare

    Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan

    Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing

    No fasting is required

    Inform staff if you have had a recent barium study or nuclear medicine scan
  • 5
    The scan takes approximately 15–30 minutes
