About DEXA / BMD
A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan measures bone mineral density (BMD) to assess your risk of fractures and osteoporosis. It uses a very low dose of radiation and is the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis.

How to Prepare
- 1Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan
- 2Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing
- 3No fasting is required
- 4Inform staff if you have had a recent barium study or nuclear medicine scan
- 5The scan takes approximately 15–30 minutes
