About Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce live images of the inside of your body. It is completely safe, uses no radiation, and is one of the most widely used diagnostic tools — including for pregnancy, abdominal organs, tendons and vascular assessments.

How to Prepare

    Drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before a pelvic or obstetric scan — do not empty your bladder

    Fast for 4–6 hours before an abdominal scan

    No preparation needed for most other ultrasounds
  • 4
    Scans typically take 20–40 minutes
